Favorites go down swinging in another sellout night

At Fight Promoter University promoter Roy Englebrecht preaches that it’s not the number of rounds you have on a show, it the number of exciting rounds you have. Last night before 1,412 wildly entertained fans at Englebrecht Battle In The Ballroom show, only five, four round fights were scheduled, but it might have been the most action packed 20 rounds ever! Appreciative fight fans tossed money in the ring after four of the five fights, a Battle In The Ballroom tradition, signifying appreciation for a great effort.

It all started with the opening fight, when 2-0 Carlos Molina, older brother of 2008 Olympian Javier Mora, should have had an easy time with 5-13 Odilion Rivera. Not in the Ballroom, as both fighters traded punches for four rounds, with a beat up Molina winning a unanimous decision.

The second bout of the evening saw highly regarding amateur Angel Magdaleno, the 2007 PAL National Champion in his pro debut facing 2-1 Constancio Alvardo. More fireworks by these 115 pounders, with both warriors battling to a split decision draw as money flew into the ring, and we had the first upset of the night.

In a rematch of a heavyweight bout in February, Huntington Beach’s Takilesi Fifita avenged his first pro loss, with a unanimous decision over Long Beach’s Ethan Cox. Fifita goes to 2-1 and Cox drops to 2-1.

Highly regarding prospect Jose Roman, out of Jerome Boxing Club in Santa Ana was debuting before 150 of his fans, facing 18 year old Jorge Magallones out of Fresno. A war is all you can say, as the jr lightweights knocked each other down in the second round with Roman finally stopping Magallones in the third round. Both fighters split over $100 in fans cash.

The featured four rounder of the evening saw 2-0 Tyrone Chatman, the best fighter to come out of St. Louis in years, who can in with two KOs. He was matched with another local boxer from Santa Ana 0-1 Ernesto Lara. Another outright war with both fighters trading punches for the first three rounds, with Lara finally stopping a defenseless Chatman with 10 unanswered punches at 2:52 of the third round. Huge upset and more money in the ring.

Englebrecht’s sellout streak has now reached 22 shows in a row, and is back at the Irvine Marriott on August 27th, with the Inaugural Battle In The Ballroom Belt on the line.
